Well, that is my true story. I was getting off a flight, I was talking to a friend beside me and fanatical collecting my carry-on bags. But after I left the airport, I double checked my possessions, I found that an important notebook was left in the seat pockets.
The following experience told me that at that time, I need to go back to the airport immediately before the round trip airplane goes back. That was a flight from LGA to DTW. Every morning they operated the same flight between the two cities. People and working shifts might change a lot if you came back on the next day. So if it was within 30 minutes, the staff would help to double check your seat or the nooks and crannies. That would be the fastest way to get your things back.
However, I got home then. I called the airport and AA. The next day I went back to DTW but the staff there could not help me. In the following months I wrote several notes to AA staff, DTW and LGA airport, in case that they may find it out someday. Then I followed the online automated filing system, (on aa.com -> customer service)
I just followed their steps and filed my form. I was told to provide AA card number, flight number and my contact number. Then I got a confirmation letter, saying that 'they will work on this case to get the lost item back'. In fact I was already despairing and didn't put much hope on this online 'robot'.
But to my surprise, it's pretty good. Although the Customer Service people didn't give me much kindly and soft words, they did it! After around 2 months, they mailed my notebook back to my home! By USPS fast delivery.
It seems that this service is processed by AA Advantage Club. Before the mailing package, they will give you notice letter first. Sometimes small pleasant surprise surrounding our life. I think from then on, I will feel warm and lovely when I see the AA logo ^_^
Anyway you go to AA main page, Lost and Found, then just follow their steps. Usually they will mail your items back within 1 month or 2. And if you lost your things in the airport or at the security, they provide you contacts to call to the airport office.
